The Nestor Winery S.A. is a relatively new enterprise. It was established in 2015 and is the result of a groundbreaking partnership between the Nestor Agricultural & Winemaking Cooperative of Messinia and the Spyros Lafazanis Family, owners of the Lafazanis Winery in Nemea, Corinthia. We established our company with a view to reviving the significant contribution of the historic “Messinia Agricultural & Winemaking Cooperative” to the Greek oenological scene through a new philosophy. The area’s unique winegrowing advantages and the one-of-a-kind vineyards of Messinia inspired Spyros Lafazanis in such a way as to set the bar very high when it came to the future of “Nestor”. Knowing fully well that the winemaking landscape has changed for good and that large, almost industrial, winemaking concerns have given way to selective winemaking practices, it was time for a drastic change: production at Nestor is now being monitored by a team of experienced oenologists and seasoned experts who are committed to modernizing and overhauling practices through constant experimentations and studies so as to steer Nestor into a new era of unlimited potential.

Today, “Nestor S.A.” counts 200 winegrowers, all members of the cooperative, who are engaged in the cultivation of a total of 2,500 stremma. In the last 80 years, many were the popular varieties in vineyards worldwide which acquired a Greek identity in Messinia. Such varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Grenache Rouge, Grenache Blanc, Cabernet Frame, Merlot, and Tempranillo. At the same time, our cooperating vineyards also grow a number of varieties native to Greece such as Fileri, Moschofilero, Roditis, Fokiano, and Mandilaria. In our privately-owned vineyard, the variety cultivated is Fileri so that it may be studied and showcased as befits a variety of historical significance; a variety considered the venerated ancestor of other more widespread and favored varieties such as Moschofilero. The terroir of Messinia has proved time and time again that it can be home not only to the classic Messinia varieties grown there but also to any other variety, encouraging it and favoring it towards yielding superb wines.

Nestor Winery is located in Pyrgos Trifylias, one of the most bountiful areas of southwestern Messinia, and nestles amid vineyards and olive groves, north of the Bay of Navarino. The winery was designed to emulate the architecture and color scheme of King Nestor’s ancient palace whose archaeological site is but 6 km away. Nestor is one of the largest winemaking concerns of Greece. Its physical plant covers an overall area of 10,000 m2 with our underground cellars occupying 3,000 m2. The winery itself has a production capacity of 10,000,000 liters, with 680 tons being our day production record. Facilities include our Little Winery which is devoted to the study and assessment of the various varieties’ and qualities’ potential. It is there where we have the chance to focus on individual details and matters which will influence the sectors of winegrowing and winemaking in the area. What is more, “Nestor” now boasts a state-of-the-art distillery, the product of Spyros Lafazanis’ long-standing expertise and experience, where we produce our fine “Avarino” tsipouro.
